Interior Door Core Types

"Diet" Core
This option offers the benefits of both hollow and solid core doors, making it the perfect choice if you want something in between. They are made with a solid core but use materials that make them lighter than traditional products. As a result, diet cores have a low average ratio of pounds to square feet, making them easier to install. You can find this special core only in our distributor catalog.
Particleboard Core
Particleboard is a solid core option made from five-ply recycled ground wood chips. These cores are more cost-effective and eco-friendly because of their material. Particleboard meets many industry standards and construction requirements and has wide availability, making it an accessible choice.
Structural Composite Lumber (SCL) or Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL)
SCL and LSL are interchangeable terms meaning a core made from wood strands connected with moisture-resistant adhesive. These cores are made from wood and plastic, making them stronger than particleboard.
LSL cores can lower the minimum dimension requirements for installing items like a lock on a door. Doors with these cores also work well in heavy-use applications and have longer life spans.
Fire-Rated
With our fire-rated cores, you can add fire resistance to most doors in our inventory. We offer options that can be rated for 20, 45, 60 and 90 minutes. The material for each door will vary depending on the fire rating, but they are made with non-combustible minerals and fiberglass. The material options include:

20 minutes: This core, rated for 20 minutes, is made from particleboard LD-1 or LD-2 that complies with ANSI A208.1.

45 minutes: These cores are made from SCL that complies with ANSI A208.1 up to 96 inches.

60 and 90 minutes: These cores comprise a non-asbestos mineral core that meets label specifications.
Fire-rated doors are most beneficial for public spaces like hotels, restaurants and schools.
Standard Hollow Core or Honeycomb
Our honeycomb cores are made from corrugated material arranged in cells. The 4-inch by 4-inch hexagonal cells provide good structure while keeping the core lightweight. These are cost-effective core options because they maximize the door's use of materials.
